About Kristan Baker, PsyD

Deciding to take the leap into therapy often involves a bunch of mixed thoughts and feelings: Hope and belief that things can get better; fear and skepticism that nothing will work; desire to have someone understand you; anxiety about letting down your guard to let someone in; wanting to grow and not feel stuck; feeling unsure if you want to change what already is familiar and comfortable in its own way. All of these thoughts and feelings make sense, even if they seem confusing!

Making sense of what is confusing, what is painful, what is holding you back, is such an important part of the therapy’s purpose and process. But to explore and figure these things out with the help of someone requires a deep sense of trust and safety. This is where I come in.

I am a NY-licensed psychologist with 20 years of experience helping teens and adults work through life’s challenges, to understand how the past can impact the present, and to recognize the healing power of connection and resilience. I have been trained in many treatment models, with a specialty in trauma. Through my work, I have seen how important it is to understand a person through their experiences and to tailor therapy to meet the person’s needs. There are common threads, however, to my approach. I believe what makes therapy work is that we are collaborators and partners in this journey. My goal is to create an environment where trust and a sense of safety can take root and grow. While I may take the lead at certain points, my aim is to support you in finding your way to answers, discovering what makes sense to you, and finding self confidence in your abilities to grow and tackle life’s stressors. I also believe that success is not a linear process, and I will be your support and advocate through the ups and downs of working through difficult times, trying new skills and finding those meaningful discoveries.
